Writing 101

2018-2019

 

Course / Content Area:  English Language Arts

 

Description: In this class, students will improve their writing skills. The focus of the class is the organization and process of writing paragraphs, essays, stories, reviews, analyses, and research papers. Emphasis is also put on learning new vocabulary to use in writing as well as becoming better at spelling. Students will learn/review all basic grammar rules and practices, focusing on one topic/technique a week. Students will also share and workshop their writing with the class.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS:

At the end of this course, you will

  • know 85 new vocabulary words
  • understand all basic and intermediate grammar usage and mechanics practices
  • be able to write in all forms including expository, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive
  • be able to organize, plan, and revise writing

 

COURSE SCHEDULE

Daily Schedule

10 - vocab word of the day

  • Copy word and definition
  • Use it in a sentence

15 min - grammar lesson

  • Present topic
  • Do activity

Friday: vocab game, winner gets extra credit

25 min - writing lesson

  • New or continuing writing assignment

Extra time: random oral vocab word testing for extra credit

  • Vocab Game: partners or teams compete to think of a synonym for each vocab word

  • Vocab Game: Vocab “basketball”- random oral testing between two teams, correct answers get a point, crumpled ball of paper into recycling bin gets another point and wins that team a chance to have another turn

  • Vocab Game: Pairs or teams compete to list the most words from memory with definitions that they can remember

  • Vocab Game: Group story - 2 groups are each given printed and cut out vocab words, they stick words to poster board and write in all the rest of the words to make the best story

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

General Rules:

  • Students are permitted to miss no more than 15 classes for the semester - all absences beyond this point must be made up before or after school, 5 tardies = 1 absence
  • Students must use art supplies correctly and with respect
  • Respectful and kind behavior and language is expected at all times, students will be asked to the class if this does not happen
  • If students miss days, they must talk with teacher about making up all assignments

 

Grading Policies:

When students are absent, they are expected to make up all work they missed within 5 class days of their return to school.
