Course / Content Area: The objective of this class is to learn how to cite Strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis, determine a theme or central idea of a text, determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings, analyze how an author’s choices concerning how to structure a text, order events with it, and manipulate time affects the story as a whole.

Description:

In this class, students will work to improve their critical reading skills and analysis. We will read a variety of different texts including novels, short stories, poems, and plays that explore human nature. There is also a strong emphasis on learning new vocabulary. Students will discuss the author’s choices, look for literary devices and keep a journal of their observations, thoughts and reactions.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS:

At the end of this course, you will

  • know the strategies to improve reading comprehension, accuracy and fluency
  • understand how writers control the experience of a reader
  • be able to identify themes, literary devices, and techniques

 

COURSE SCHEDULE

Daily Schedule

Each day will begin with a warm up writing prompt.

We will read each day either in groups or silently and independently. We will then do an activity relating to what we have read.

 

Calendar of Topics and Projects

Students will keep a journal of all writing warm ups, and responses to text. The journal will be graded. Students will also produce projects and essays for assessment.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

General Rules:

  • Students are permitted to miss no more than 15 classes for the semester - all absences beyond this point must be made up before or after school, 5 tardies = 1 absence
  • Students must use art supplies correctly and with respect
  • Respectful and kind behavior and language is expected at all times, students will be asked to the class if this does not happen
  • If students miss days, they must talk with teacher about making up all assignments

 

Grading Policies:

When students are absent, they are expected to make up all work they missed within 5 class days of their return to school.
