Science Writing

Period 1, 0900-0955

 

Course / Content Area:  

This course is a dual-content class.  Students will review English and Science content.

 

Description:

This course is intended to the fields of English writing and science.   Throughout the course, students will explore both science fiction works and scientific articles.  Students will compose flash fiction works, as well as short science fiction stories. Inversely, they will also study the scientific method, apply it to everyday, real-world problems, conduct experiments, and write lab reports detailing their findings.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS:

At the end of this course, you will

… construct a lab report, faithfully reporting the results of an experiment.

COURSE SCHEDULE

Daily Schedule

The daily schedule of the course may change based on the material, teaching tools, and class needs, but will generally follow the flow shown below:

- Warm-up activity (5-15 minutes)

- Review of content (10-20 minutes)

- Application of content, review, discussion, or activity (10-20 minutes)

- Final out and dismissal (5-10 minutes)

 

Calendar of Topics and Projects

This course is broken into several units.  Each unit with emphasis a different skill and aspect of writing or science.  Units will include:

- Science Fiction short stories and composition

- The Scientific Method

- Examination of modern fields of science and looking toward the future

- Conducting experiments and composing lab reports

- Exploring Science Fiction literature

 

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

General Rules:

  • Students are permitted to miss no more than 15 classes for the semester - all absences beyond this point must be made up before or after school, 5 tardies = 1 absence
  • Students must use art supplies correctly and with respect
  • Respectful and kind behavior and language is expected at all times, students will be asked to the class if this does not happen
  • If students miss days, they must talk with teacher about making up all assignments

 

Grading Policies:

When students are absent, they are expected to make up all work they missed within 5 class days of their return to school.
